
Dr. Martin L. Fackler, Jr. and his wife, Sandra Fox Fackler, Ph.D. made a generous gift to the George A. Smathers Libraries to endow the position of the director of the Health Science Center Libraries. We express our sincere appreciation to Drs. Martin and Sandra Fackler for their vision of the future and generous support of the Libraries and scholarship.
Dr. Martin L. Fackler, Jr. (1933-2015) earned a medical degree from Yale University. During his 30-year military career, he was a Naval Staff Surgeon in Vietnam, Japan, and Germany, and Chief of Surgery in Memphis, Tennessee and Germany. After 15 years with the Navy, Dr. Fackler joined the Army and was Chief of Surgery in Fort Carson, Colorado and Staff Surgeon in San Francisco, California. He was Director of the Wound Ballistics Laboratory at the Letterman Army Institute of Research in San Francisco. He then became an independent consultant to law enforcement and military officials worldwide, testifying as a wound expert in cases spanning the United States, Canada, England, and Ireland. Dr. Fackler had numerous teaching appointments in Tennessee, Maryland, California, Florida, and France.
