Heath Science Center leaders joined over 300 students for the April 16th grand opening of the redesigned UF Health Science Center Library first floor.

The UF Health Science Center Library renovation, which started in October, was aimed at creating a more suitable space for the contemporary needs of the students and faculty.

The library’s first floor, now designated for collaborative study, is a venue for interaction with others and for unique spontaneous teaching moments that are so crucial to the learning experience.

David S. Guzick, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice president for health affairs and president of UF&Shands Health System and Cecilia Botero, associate dean of the George A. Smathers Libraries and the Fackler director of the Health Science Center Libraries spoke at the library’s grand opening and ribbon-cutting event, held from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The redesign of the library emphasized increased access to technology and power, improved natural lighting, informal casual seating with improved access to needed technology, and a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere.

Infrastructure improvements were also made. The number of power outlets in the floors and columns for students’ laptops was greatly increased, and air system upgrades were made. New lighting, floors, wood paneling, ceiling tiles and paint were also added on the first floor.

With help from a National Library of Medicine (NLM) grant, the HSC Library is working with faculty across UF to introduce sex and gender differences research in curricula and professional development and to better support and disseminate existing research in this area. One key element to this outreach effort is highlighting the NLM’s own Women’s Health Resources portal (http://whr.nlm.nih.gov/). For more information on the project, please visit our LibGuide at guides.uflib.ufl.edu/sexdifferences or contact Michele Tennant at tennantm@ufl.edu.
